Actualmente todavía presente en la toponimia nevadense, el buitre leonado (Gyps fulvus) es una antigua nidificante en este macizo (las últimas citas datan de inicios del siglo XX), aunque cada día es menos dificil de observar en la Sierra. El progresivo incremento de sus avistamientos en el presente siglo debería ser causa más que suficiente como para que la administración llevara a cabo un programa de fijación de la especie, cuyos frutos futuros fuesen el retorno a nidificar en Sierra Nevada.
