Thaumetopoea pityocampa es una peluda mariposa nocturna cuyas urticantes orugas tienen la costumbre de procesionar en "fila india". Los bolsones protegen a las orugas de las frías temperaturas serranas, desfoliando a sus plantas hospedadoras (del género Pinus). A pesar del alarmante aspecto que a veces presentan los árboles (desprovistos por completo de sus acículas), casi nunca llegan a morir, regenerándose. The nests protect the caterpillars from the cold mountain temperatures, defoliating their host plants (of the genus Pinus). Despite the alarming appearance the trees sometimes present (completely devoid of their needles), they almost never die, regenerating.
