Cientificamente denominado Pinus pinaster var. acutisquama (aunque taxonómicamente muchos autores no reconocen dicha variedad), esta conífera es de manera espontánea propia de las sierras con sustrato de dolomías y peridotitas; en nuestra Sierra vive solo en los blanquizales (arenales) de La Dehesilla-Trevenque (en la imagen), Alayos y Buitreras, aunque a nivel específico es ampliamente utilizada en los cultivos de coniferas, como ocurre en los amplios pinares del Marquesado del Zenete. Sus escasos bosques naturales en este macizo montañoso son una de las joyas nevadenses que esperemos los incendios nunca alcancen. Vive en multitud de ecologías, aunque apenas se la encuentra en bosques cerrados, siendo fácil de observar dado su ruidoso gregarismo.
